If we all make small changes in our purchases and practices, they turn into big changes for our Earth

Earth Day is right around the corner and the mantra reduce, reuse and recycle is getting louder.

I’m so glad there’s a day for thinking about the planet because I have to be honest that it’s hard to think about it all of the time. But, having this day marked off to check in with myself and my lifestyle really helps prepare me for a greener year ahead.

There are so many terms out there that have to do with eco-friendly living that it’s hard to know what they all really mean. Well, I can help. Here is a mini-pedia (thank you Wikipedia) of eco terms that will help you make educated choices Earth Day and all year round.

Recycle : New products made of used or otherwise wasted materials. This reduces the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduces air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling).

Sustainable : Products that conserve an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources.

Reusable : Products made to reduce: waste, consumption of natural materials and pollution by its ability to be used without needing replacement after one use.

Fair Trade : Trade in which fair prices are paid to producers in developing countries. This usually is accompanied by education programs and sustainability practices that help create a future full of more eco-conscious people.

Vegan : Products reject the use of animal products on the premise that the industrial practice is environmentally damaging and unsustainable.

Organic Cotton : Anything made using cotton material that is free from chemicals or genetically modified seeds.
